Colleagues Turned Best Friends : Pros and Cons

As a millennial, out of those super tough life decisions to make, there goes another tricky one: Whether to make friends at work or not! It’s okay to not socialize as the job you applied for never asked you about your social butterfly skills. Before I ever stepped into the ‘office world’, I’ve had been forewarned by stories of how horrible being bffs at work can turn out in the end. Ergo, I had decided that the only kind of relationship I need in office is professional. If you are new to an organization or working with a new group of people, you may want to keep your relationships with colleagues on a bit superficial level. However, having someone you can relate to in the office has definitely been a plus for me so far. I have been lucky to have a few of them to blow off steam with and have a shoulder to cry on every time my manager reduced me to tears! Even though I prefer to take a limited approach to office friendships, I have met few really cool people who have educated me with work knowledge as well as the so called ‘work politics’ and have ended up being really bezzie mates with me even after change in their careers.

Here’s one of our blog writers, Anushka who shares her opinion on this:

“I think its not always possible to make friends at workplace but to have one can be really wonderful. I have had some amazing friendships that develop during my full time working days. We are still in touch and have genuine bonds that surpass our workplaces. But I’ve also had bad experiences where people have back stabbed me. I’ve felt naïve then but when I look back now, I feel those were life lessons for me. A good colleague who becomes a friend can make the workplace exciting but it can also distract you from your job!”

  1. You probably have a team of trust, loyalty and effectiveness.

  2. You know their strengths and weaknesses.

  3. You will have someone around at work who you enjoy spending time with.

  4. Increased productivity for both you and your bff-coworker

  5. They are the ones who do not refrain from giving candid feedback

  1. They might take advantage of the friendship and not work as hard as you.

  2. Other employees may assume you are being biased towards them even if you aren’t.

  3. Cooperation with a friend is difficult as they may not take you seriously.

  4. Problems between you and your friend may be carried out of the office and affect your personal life and the common friends you share.

  5. Sometimes when you are teamed up with your friend for a project and, your boss might just think it’s not about work even if it is!

Thus, we should be grateful to the people who make us happy; be it a colleague or not. A true friend is one of the most precious possessions that one can have in his/her life!
