Life in times of Corona – Mom Life, Homeschooling and more..

It’s almost about to be a month since the official lockdown was announced in India by the government. I know women, mothers and parents have been the ones who have and the most burnouts for weeks. Your mental and emotional health matters the most and it sets the tone of your relationships and the environment in your house.

So I want to firstly ask you to sit down with a glass of water and relax before you continue reading this article.

I am a homeschooling mom, no not due to the lockdown or corona. I have always been, even before my daughter turned 1 I was this hands on mom reading and researching her way through Early Childhood and Education. But as I started our homeschooling journey I realised a few things. I want to share them with you from a mother to another.

Be Kind & Gentle

The first thing that happens when you are not emotionally ready to deal with so much in life (Corona, Lockdown, double responsibilities and work) is that you lose your cool. Saying and doing things that you are going to regret later is very easy. Your kids will forgive, forget and move on but the mom’s guilt stays. What helped me personally is the counting method. Whenever I am about to lose my cool, I start counting first. 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 , on most days my daughter gathers her mess and moves on to something else before the 5. But last month has been challenging so I on most days count till 10 or 15.

We are all in this together

While your little one may not understand how big this pandemic is, for them not going out and the lack of physical stimulation is frustrating as it is for us adults. Try to understand each other on most days. We are all flawsome and that’s just how life is.

Focus on what your child needs

Most of the schools have started the distance learning through Youtube Videos and Whatsapp messages, while that is good academically, you need to focus more on what your child needs right now. Anyway when all this is over your child has to go back to the old ways of schooling, so why not ditch the academics and let the child enjoy her interest.

Focus on yourself

When I said be kind and gentle, I didn’t only mean it for the kids. You need to be kind and gentle to yourself too. Ask your partner or other family members to help you out. If your kids are older ask them to help you with cooks, sweeping, hanging the clothes to dry and putting back the dishes. It’s not your job to bear the brunt of the patriarchal system. So take that nap, wear that dress, eat those chocolates if you have to. Because you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Stress & Anxiety

I would be lying if I say I am not anxious about the entire situation in the world right now. I have a history of anxiety and everything going on has started making me more anxious. But there are some grounding techniques that help me and the easiest way is the 5-4-3-2-1 meditation. Read the post under the hashtag #54321meditation

Fun, not school

While it is easy to school children in the traditional way, where the adult teaches the child, more than ever now it is time to involve fun in the school. Remember you are at Home and not school. As long as your child is having fun, they will be interested in learning. Some easy ways to have fun is, example – the topic is family or types of family – just pull out all the old albums and revisit the memories captured. Fun schooling is way better than rote learning.

Let the monkey jump

Young children need physical activity every single day. If they are not able to lend out the energy you will soon start experiencing meltdowns and tantrums. So always start the morning & evening with physical activity like jumping, running, yoga, karate practice, dance, etc. Jumpy kids are Happy kids!

Find the spot

Because schooling involves a lot of written work and worksheets, it is wise to find a dedicated spot only for those tasks. A child will get used to it, and will start adapting to her routine whenever she is in that space.

I hope this post helps you and your family in adjusting to the new normal for the next few days. If you have any queries or need any help regarding homeschooling, drop a comment below or send a DM on Instagram.
