Why I don’t need a huge friend circle

Social media can make it seem like everyone you know has a massive group of friends that they party with every week. But is it always great to have so many friends? Let’s find out.

It may feel like you are missing out on a lot of fun when you see a bunch of friends hanging out together regularly on social media. At times, the impact can turn out to be quite toxic too. You might end up trying hard to fit in a group that you don’t belong to. Actually, if it makes you happy, great, but if doesn’t, it’s time to re-analyze.

I have a lot friends who are so far off, in terms of distance, and we hardly get to talk. We do catch up once in a blue moon, and one of them was a close friend during my college days. We would share almost all aspects of our lives, but with time, we evolved into different people and our priorities also changed with a busy adult life.

A friendship can flourish owing to various reasons – common interests, cities, similar choices, same college and even sharing birthdays.

The story of my best friend and I started from school and since then, we have seen each at our best and the worst. From surviving exams to partying hard, discussing relationship issues to those awkward teenager stuff, we have shared everything.

We lost touch after school and went on to study in different universities, but it wasn’t a bad thing. I think we both realized each other’s worth even more during that phase.

I don’t remember promising each other that we will always stay in touch no matter what, but it has just been that way. I feel so proud that even distance hasn’t mattered. We hardly talk through messages or call each other as we both have such busy lives, but when we do, it’s a wonderfully-long conversation.

Things were hard when I moved to Australia and she was preparing for her civil services exam. When I had my baby, she made an effort to stay in touch and visited me every time I was in India.

We do confess to each other that the best days were the ones filled with giggles and silly jokes. But we over the years, we never felt the need to have more friends. All you need is someone who makes you feel comfortable.

This person will never judge you, will love you unconditionally and will always have your back. This doesn’t mean she’ll be blind to your flaws. She will always be the first one to tell you when you’re getting annoying or at fault, but she will love you anyway.

So, the point I am trying to make here is that if you have one such person in your life, it is enough.

Swapnil, you are that one person to me. The one who is always loyal and makes me comfortable at all times. I love your company and I know you will always tell me the truth, however bitter it may be.

I just want you to know that when one has such a friend, there’s no need for any more. I am so proud of the fact that even amidst the chaos of daily life, we always manage to be there for each other through thick and thin.

This post is my way of showing gratitude to you my friend. Love you so much. To my readers, find that one friend in your circle and stick to her!

‘Happy Friendship Day dear friend’.
